Birth Chart vs Star Map: What's the Difference?

If you've been looking for a personalized "sky" print, you've probably seen two kinds of poster that look similar at a glance: star maps and birth charts. Both start from a date and a place. But they show very different things, and the right choice depends on what the print means to the person receiving it.

A star map shows the night sky as you'd see it

A star map is a picture of the stars and constellations visible from a location at a particular time — the view you would have had if you'd looked straight up. It's a lovely way to mark an evening: a first date, a proposal, a wedding night. It doesn't tell you anything about zodiac signs or planets; it's a picture of the view.

A birth chart shows where the planets were along the zodiac

A birth chart (or natal chart) is the diagram astrologers use. Instead of drawing the stars overhead, it places the Sun, the Moon and the planets around a wheel of the twelve zodiac signs, exactly as they were positioned at a precise moment, seen from a precise place on Earth. It also includes:

  • The Rising sign (Ascendant) — the sign on the eastern horizon at that moment.
  • Twelve houses — divisions of the wheel that astrologers associate with different areas of life.
  • Aspects — the angles between planets, drawn as lines across the centre.

Because the Rising sign and houses shift every few minutes, a birth chart depends on an exact time in a way a star map usually doesn't.

Which should you choose?

Choose a star map if the moment is about a place and an evening — the night you met, a proposal under the stars — and astrology isn't part of the story.

Choose a birth chart if the gift is about a person. It's a portrait of who they are in astrological terms: their Sun, Moon and Rising signs are printed right under their name, and the chart itself is unique to their moment of birth. People who enjoy astrology will recognise their placements instantly; people who don't still get a striking, one-of-a-kind piece of geometric art.

How Natal Atelier charts are made

We only make birth charts. Each poster is calculated from your birth date, time and city using an astronomical ephemeris, with the historical time zone and daylight saving rules for that place and date. Houses use the Placidus system (whole-sign houses for births above about 66° latitude). You can preview your own chart free on the product page before you order, in three styles: Midnight, Minimal and Vintage.

Frequently asked questions

Can a birth chart be made without a birth time?

Yes. Without a time, the chart shows the Sun, Moon and planets in their signs but leaves out the Rising sign and houses. Our posters label this clearly as "Birth time unknown".

Is a birth chart the same as a horoscope?

No. A newspaper horoscope is a short general column written for everyone who shares a Sun sign. A birth chart is individual — it's calculated for one exact moment and place.
