How to Read Your Birth Chart Poster: Sun, Moon and Rising Explained

A birth chart — also called a natal chart — is a map of where the Sun, the Moon and the planets were in the sky at the exact moment and place you were born. It looks intricate at first glance, but you don't need to be an astrologer to enjoy reading it. Start with three placements, then explore the rest of the wheel at your own pace.

The wheel: twelve signs around the edge

The outer ring of your chart is the zodiac: twelve signs of 30° each, from Aries to Pisces, making a full 360° circle. Every planet on your poster sits at a precise degree inside one of these signs. That position is calculated from astronomical data for your birth date, time and place — it is not a generic "star sign" lookup.

Your Sun sign: the core of your chart

The Sun sign is the one most people already know. It's where the Sun was on your birthday, and it changes roughly once a month. In astrological tradition it describes your central identity — the energy you grow into over a lifetime. On a Natal Atelier poster you'll find the Sun symbol (a circle with a dot) on the wheel and the sign named in the line under your name.

Your Moon sign: your inner world

The Moon moves fast — it changes sign about every two and a half days — so two people born in the same month often have different Moon signs. Astrologers associate the Moon with emotions, comfort and what makes you feel at home. If your Sun sign description never quite fit you, your Moon sign is often the missing piece.

Your Rising sign: how you meet the world

The Rising sign (or Ascendant) is the sign that was coming up over the eastern horizon at the moment you were born. Because the Earth turns, the Rising sign changes on average about every two hours, which is why an accurate birth time matters so much. It's traditionally linked to first impressions, style and the way you approach new situations. On the poster it's marked "ASC" on the left-hand side of the wheel.

The houses: twelve areas of life

The lines dividing the inner wheel are the houses. They start from your Rising sign and run counter-clockwise, each one associated with an area of life — the 1st house with self, the 7th with partnerships, the 10th with career and public life, and so on. Natal Atelier charts use the Placidus house system, the most widely used system in Western astrology. For births very far north or south (above about 66° latitude), where Placidus can't be calculated reliably, we use whole-sign houses instead.

The lines in the middle: aspects

The straight lines connecting planets across the centre of the chart are aspects — specific angles between two planets, such as 120° (a trine) or 90° (a square). They're what give each chart its unique geometric pattern, and they're a big part of why no two posters look alike.

What if you don't know your birth time?

You can still have a beautiful, accurate chart. Without a time we can't calculate the Rising sign or the houses, so we show the planets in their signs and leave those out. The Moon is placed using its position at noon on your birth date, which is correct for most people — but if the Moon changed sign that day, it may fall in the neighbouring sign. Your poster will say "Birth time unknown" so it's always honest about what it shows. If you can find your time later — on a birth certificate, a hospital record or from a family member — it's worth it.

Reading your own poster, step by step

  1. Find the line under your name: it lists your Sun, Moon and Rising signs.
  2. Locate the ☉ Sun and ☽ Moon symbols on the wheel and see which sign segment they sit in.
  3. Find "ASC" on the left — that's your Rising sign and the start of your 1st house.
  4. Notice which houses hold the most planets; astrologers read that as where much of your attention goes.
  5. Open the one-page reading PDF we email with every order for a plain-English summary of your big three.

Frequently asked questions

Is a birth chart the same as a star map?

No. A star map shows the constellations visible in the night sky from a place on a date. A birth chart is an astrological diagram of where the Sun, Moon and planets were along the zodiac at your exact moment of birth.

How accurate is the chart on the poster?

Planet positions are computed from a professional astronomical ephemeris for your birth date, time and the coordinates of your birthplace, including the historical time zone and daylight saving rules for that place and date.

Can I see my chart before I buy?

Yes. On the product page, enter your details and a live preview of your own poster appears in seconds — free, with nothing stored.
